Cubano & Rum

In the evenings, my grandmother would sit quietly on the porch in her rocking chair, gently waving her mother’s hand fan, trying to stir the thick Cuban heat. The air carried the earthy scent of fresh grass, rich tobacco leaves, and strong brewed coffee. In the distance, guitars played traditional Cuban folk songs, their melodies drifting through the warm night like stories being told.

About five miles from the farm stood the distillery that produced some of the finest rum in the world — Bacardi. Many of you have tasted it, or at least heard its name. Evenings were often filled with older men gathered together, sipping Bacardi rum, smoking Cohiba cigars, and singing songs that etched themselves into my memory forever.
